Tiger Woods attributes his first year without a win to turmoil at home and on the golf course. Woods has one last chance,even though it wouldn’t count as official on the PGA Tour. He is the tournament host of the Chevron World Challenge. Woods has not lost at this event since 2005,although he didn’t play the last two years. Despite not winning and no longer being No. 1,Woods says he has learned a lot on the golf course this year.

Norman out of rich list

Former world golf No. 1 Greg Norman has been dropped from the list of Australia’s top sports earners after 15 years because its compilers believe his income now derives more from business interests than sporting endeavors. Formula One driver Mark Webber,fourth last year,now tops the list after earning US$12.7 million (9.7 million euros) last season. Andrew Bogut,who plays for the Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA,is second for the second straight year with $11.9 million (9.1 million euros).

Holyfield to fight Nielsen

Former world heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield plans to fight Denmark’s Brian Nielsen in March. Danish promoters say the fight will take place in Denmark on March 5. Holyfield is 48 years old. Nielsen is 45. Holyfield,who held the heavyweight title four times,knocked out Francois Botha last April after losses to Nikolay Valuev and Sultan Ibragimov. Nielsen,who lost to Mike Tyson in 2001,retired in 2003 because of a knee injury but said recently he was ready for a comeback.

Two swimmers punished

Russian swimmer Evgeny Aleshin and Lukasz Giminski of Poland have been suspended for two years after three failures to make themselves available for drug testing. FINA says the pair were banned for “a combination of three filing failures within an 18-month period.” The 21-year-old Aleshin retired before FINA’s doping panel announced its decision Wednesday. The Russian and Polish swimming federations were ordered to pay the costs of the investigations.

Ex-cycling champ banned

Former world road racing champion Igor Astarloa has received a two-year doping ban from the Spanish cycling federation. The rider,who won the 2003 title,was suspended Wednesday for irregularities detected in his blood profile. He was also fined euro35,000 ($46,000). Astarloa was one of five riders facing bans due to suspicious blood profiles in the “biological passport” program run by world governing body UCI. Astarloa,who retired at the end of last year,was fired by German team Milram in 2008 because of a suspicious blood test.

Chelsea sorts out dispute

A managers’ union says Chelsea and its former assistant coach Ray Wilkins have resolved the dispute surrounding his departure from the Premier League club. Chelsea announced on Nov. 11 it was not renewing Wilkins’ contract and that the former England midfielder would be leaving the club with immediate effect. The League Managers Association said Wednesday the two parties have reached a settlement. A former Chelsea player,Wilkins had played a key role in helping the Blues win the Premier League-FA Cup double last season.
