Tough draw for Federer

Roger Federer was handed a tough draw on Friday in his bid for a record-equaling seventh Wimbledon title. The defending champion and top-seeded was drawn in the top half with Andy Roddick,Novak Djokovic and former champion Lleyton Hewitt. Second-seeded Rafael Nadal has Andy Murray and Robin Soderling in the bottom half of the draw. In the women’s section,top-seeded Serena Williams plays Michelle Larcher de Brito of Portugal in the opening round while five-time champion Venus Williams opens against Paraguay’s Rossana De Los Rios.

Sharath Kamal storms into Rd 2

Top seed Indian Achanta Sharath Kamal advanced to the second round of the men’s singles at the Indian Open ITTF Pro Tour tournament after an easy win over Ji Min Han of Korea. Sharath won 11-9 11-6 5-11 11-8 11-4 at the Yamuna Sports Complex. R Abishek’s dream run,however,came to an end with the Indian qualifier going down fighting to Chih Chi Wu of Chinese Taipei 11-3 8-11 3-11 11-6 11-9 11-6.

In doubles,Sharath and Subhajit Saha beat Xiaoli Cai and Zhongze Liu of Singapore 3-11 8-11 11-9 11-2 11-5 7-11 12-10 while Harmeet Desai and Devesh Karia upset second-seeded Patrick Baum and Dimitrij Ovtcharov of Germany 11-6 11-6 11-3 11-9. In women’s singles,Mouma Das lost to Dal Rae Jin of Korea 5-11 7-11 16-14 3-11 6-11.

Canada hold India 1-1

Indian eves squandered a one goal lead to play out a 1-1 draw against Canada in their second game of the four-match Test series at Tamanawis Park,Surrey. Skipper Surinder Kaur (41st minute) broke the deadlock in the second half but her Canadian counterpart Stephanie Nesbitt (63rd) drew parity seven minutes from time.

Paes-Dlouhy in last four

Top seeds Leander Paes and Lukas Dlouhy progressed to the semi-finals of the UNICEF Open,defeating Thiemo de Bakker and Robin Haase in straight sets in s-Hertogenbosch,the Netherlands. The Indo-Czech pair won 7-5 6-3.

Srinath is sole leader

IM N Srinath outwitted joint overnight leader IM K Priyadarshan to emerge sole leader at the end of the fourth round in the Asian Junior Chess Championship. IMs Vidit Santosh Gujrathi,M R Lalith Babu,M Shyam Sundar and Anwesh Upadhyaya are second with 3.5 points apiece.

Orissa hold Bengal 1-1

Orissa scored an injury time goal to hold hosts Bengal 1-1 in their quarterfinal league match of the national junior football championship. In another quarterfinal,Chandigarh rode on Gangandeep Singh’s hat-trick by to blank Manipur 3-0.

Pujara scores unbeaten 208

Cheteshwar Pujara’s double century (208 not out) paved the way for India A’s massive total of 508 for 8 declared against West Indies A. In ply,West Indies scored 12 for the loss of Kraigg Braithwaite before bad light forced early close of play on Day Two.

SA reach 104/1 in 2nd Test

Alviro Petersen hit 52 to help South Africa make a confident start to the second Test against the West Indies before rain prompted an early lunch. Petersen struck three fours and two sixes before Shane Shillingford dismissed him as the visitors reached 104 for one at interval. Captain Graeme Smith was not out on 45 while Hashim Amla was yet to score.

Micheel in lead at US Open

Shaun Micheel sunk several clutch putts on his way to a 2-under 69 at the US Open on Thursday,earning him a share of the lead alongside side Paul Casey and Brendon De Jonge. Woods opened with a round of 74,five shots out of the lead and one better than Mickelson’s 75.

Meanwhile,India’s Arjun Atwal had a disappointing debut at the US Open stuttered to four-over 75 to lie tied 66th.
