A fierce drive from midfielder Wesley Sneijder powered Netherlands to a 1-0 win over Japan in a World Cup Group E match on Saturday, taking the Dutch a big step towards qualifying for the last 16.

Sneijder struck in the 53rd minute, taking a pass from Robin van Persie, and hitting it from just outside the box.

Japanese keeper Eiji Kawashima looked to have it covered but the ball hit his wrist and went in for yet another keeper error at the finals.

Netherlands have six points in Group E and will qualify for the second round before their final game if Cameroon fail to beat Denmark in Pretoria later on Saturday.
