Refuting Sania Mirzas allegation of a give-and-take in the selection of London Games tennis squad, the All India Tennis Federation (AITA) said the contentious mixed doubles pairing was done on merit. This comes a day after Mirza said that she was used as a bait to pacify a disgruntled Leander Paes.
The committee selected World No.7 and India No.1 Leander Paes to partner World No.12 and India No.1 Sania Mirza in the mixed doubles Olympics event. With a combined ranking of 19 they were placed 9th in the top-12 teams to be eligible for mixed doubles. This selection is purely on merit, AITA said in a statement signed by secretary-general Bharat Oza.
Sania had also expressed disappointment over AITAs decision to split her partnership with Bhupathi. What is even more shocking is the manner in which facts have been misrepresented… to justify the breaking up of a team that won a second Grand Slam… Leander and I are not the only combination likely to get a direct entry in the mixed doubles, she had stated on Tuesday.
AITA,in turn, tried to pacify Sania by showering her with praise. Sania Mirza is a great Indian player like Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi. AITA respects all its players and is fully aware of the accomplishments of Sania Mirza as an excellent tennis player.
Countering Sanias claim that the AITA hadnt sent her a congratulatory message after she won the mixed doubles title at the French Open, the tennis body said that they had wished her mother,Nasima. The AITA also appealed to the players to refrain from going public on the selection issue.
Hesh backs Sania
Meanwhile,Mahesh Bhupathi backed Sania, saying she should have been consulted by the federation before announcing the team. We have good record. Recently we won the French Open together. She was used without even being consulted as to what her best options are, Bhupathi said. Obviously, she issued a very emotional statement and I totally understand where it is coming from. As far as I am concerned,I stand by Sania and think we are the best mixed doubles pair, insisted Bhupathi.
