The evening training sessions at the DLTA tennis complex were in full swing by Thursday afternoon, but the rows of kids intently concentrating on their forehands and backhands thought nothing of taking a short break once Sania Mirza made her appearance on court. The Hyderabad players trip to the Capital was primarily to visit her doctor,Jatin Chaudhary, and she traded a few rallies with Vivek Shokeen to assess her fitness before rushing off to catch her flight home.
The focus on the 22-year-old is now sharper than ever since her Australian Open win,and she laughs while recounting the welcome she received once she and Mahesh Bhupathi returned to India as mixed doubles champions. I was exhausted but it was so good to come back. I had to eat a lot of cakes and sweets, she said,as her young fans contented themselves with whispering excitedly among themselves.
Sania was originally supposed to travel to Perth from Melbourne for the Fed Cup,but an abdominal muscle pull forced her to change her plans and left the Indian team without their main player.
Long tear
I could feel that my muscles were sore in my very first match in Melbourne, but I didnt want to get a scan done in the middle of the tournament. I did get one before the semi-final,and it showed I had a 3.5 cm tear, she said.
I served today for the first time since Sunday, and I didnt feel any pain,so I hope its fine now. But what Im happiest about after the Australian Open apart from the title,of course is the way my wrist held up even though I was playing against so many players from the mens tour.
The man credited with Sanias return to competitive tennis gave her a clean bill of health. Chaudhary watched her during her short training session. We did a session in the morning, and I examined her right now. She had a Grade 2 muscle pull and a partial tear, but its fine now, he said.
Sania will probably be playing next week at a WTA tour event in Pattaya,Bangkok, and is a certainty for the Dubai championships from February 16.
