Receiving of CWG Baton rare honour: Bindra’s family

Family of Olympic gold medalist marksman Abhinav Bindra,who would receive 2010 Commonwealth Games Baton from Queen Elizabeth II,sounded happy at the prospect.

Family of Olympic gold medalist marksman Abhinav Bindra,who would receive 2010 Commonwealth Games Baton from Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace in London,was happy that the shooter has got the rare distinction.

“It is a rare honour for Abhinav Bindra. We are happy that Abhinav would receive the Queen’s Baton,” said his family here.

A total of 11 past and present athletes,who have brought laurels to the country,will take part in the launch of Queen’s Baton Relay on October 29.

Besides Bindra,the other athletes participating in the event would be Olympic bronze medallists Vijender Singh and Sushil Kumar,Milkha Singh,Gurbachan Singh Randhawa,Prakash Padukone,Kapil Dev,Karnam Malleswari,Sania Mirza,Misha Grewal and Dilip Tirkey.

Ten Indian Olympic Association (IOA) officials and 15 other “workforce” will accompany the athletes,making the total Indian contingent to 36.

The 240-day international leg of the QBR will traverse 170,000 km by land,air and sea,touching all the Commonwealth countries before reaching its final destination Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi next year.
