Pakistan’s Supreme Court issued a contempt notice to Interior Minister Rehman Malik for 'interfering' in a probe into alleged wrongdoing and financial irregularities in a state-owned steel company.

Pakistan’s Supreme Court today issued a contempt notice to Interior Minister Rehman Malik for “interfering” in a probe into alleged wrongdoing and financial irregularities in a state-owned steel company and summoned him to appear before it on December 24 to explain his actions.

An apex court bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, which initiated suo motu proceedings after taking note of a media report of alleged corruption in the Pakistan Steel Mills, took exception to Malik’s decision to change the officer probing the matter.

The bench said the minister’s action amounted to interfering in the working of the judiciary.
