Pak fully supports extension for Sharma: Gilani

India proposed 70-year-old Sharma's name for second term at concluding session of CHOGM.

Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani today supported India’s proposal for an extension in the term of Kamlesh Sharma as Secretary General of the Commonwealth.

In a message from Perth where he is attending the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting,Gilani backed India’s move for Sharma to be given another four-year term.

Gilani said that “Pakistan fully supports the extension in the term of Mr Sharma”,an official statement said.

Veteran Indian diplomat Sharma was today re-appointed Secretary General of the 54-nation grouping for a term beginning April 2012.

India proposed 70-year-old Sharma’s name for a second term at the concluding session of the CHOGM and Pakistan seconded it.

The move follows India’s backing of Pakistan in recent elections for a non-permanent slot in the UN Security Council.
