NRI Arjan Vekaria,president of the Hindu Forum of Britain has been appointed as one of 13 faith advisers by UK Communities Secretary John Denham.
Vekaria will act as a ‘sounding board’ to advise on effective engagement with faith communities and the impact of Communities and Local Government policy on faith communities in order to encourage a deeper and broader relationship between Government and faith communities.
He has been involved in voluntary work with the Hindu Community in the UK for over 35 years. Born in Uganda,Arjan spent part of his childhood in India before migrating to the UK in the 1970s.
Vekaria started as a building labourer and is now a partner in Vascroft Contractors Ltd. He has over the years raised significant sums of money for charities.
He has been awarded many honours including ‘Pride of Kutch’ in 2009 and ‘Pride of Gujarat’ 2008,by the state of Gujarat in India; ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ 2006,’Community Personality of the Year’ in 2008,by the Home Secretary and Minister of Justice in the UK.
Vekaria said: “I am truly honoured to be appointed to this position and will do my best to raise Hindu issues both good and bad at a level where they will make a difference.
I also hope that the views of all the faith communities start to make a real difference to shaping Government policy and decision making.”
John Denham said: “This new panel brings together an unprecedented wealth of knowledge and experience that will help advise on the big issues facing society such as the economy,parenting,achieving social justice and tackling climate change”.
He added: “Each adviser is has an outstanding track record of achievement. Together they will help inform Government on the views and values of faith communities,enabling us to learn from the unique insights that faith groups bring to contemporary issues.”
