Millions of lost cash found in Japans tsunami hit coastal areas

Rescue workers and Japanese citizens have handed over millions of lost cash to police,which they have found while carrying out their tasks in the mud-covered coastal areas in northeastern regions of the country that were devastated following the March 11 earthquake-cum-tsunami.

Police and local governments are looking out for the owners of the assets,but survivors are urging them to use the money for reconstruction works till the owners were found.

Under Japanese law,people who find money can keep it if the original owners do not come forward within the three-month custodial period.

When people who find it give up their claim or fail to show up to receive it within two months after the expiry of the custodial period,ownership is automatically transferred to prefectural governments.
