The month-long lockout at Maruti Suzukis violence-hit Manesar plant will end on August 21,with the company resuming partial production.
Chairman R C Bhargava said Thursday that termination notices had been issued to 500 regular workers allegedly involved in the July 18 violence that had led to the death of a senior executive. Around a hundred were injured, some seriously. More workers may be sacked depending on investigations,he said.
The company has also decided that only 20 per cent of its workers would now be on contract while no worker on contract would be employed on the shop floor. Prior to the lock-out,the Manesar plant operated with 1,525 permanent workers and 1,869 on contract.
Contract workers would be screened starting September 7 onwards, and only the ones who qualify with their skill sets will be made permanent.
We have lost confidence in the workers. We have identified the workers who were involved… During the last strike, the very same workers had signed the good conduct bond, said Bhargava.
To start with,Maruti will produce 150 cars a day with 300 workers and gradually go to its full capacity of around 1,700 cars a day. The production will mostly start with Swift, followed by Swift Dzire.
Haryana has assured the company its full support. We have posted a full battalion of India Reserve Battalion. The force will be stationed inside the company as long as Maruti wants, Yudhvir Singh Malik,Principal Secretary,Industries, said.
Maruti said the state would also deploy 500 RAF personnel led by a senior police officer near Manesar. In each shift hundred of them will be inside its factory.
Around 40 personal security officers have been provided for managers, supervisors and, where necessary, the workers. Security arrangements have been made at their residences, the Maruti release said.
The company will also deploy 100 armed security personnel, who will be directly under the management.
