Scotlands Jamie Murrays surname has caused him a lot of explaining to do,ever since his younger brother,World number 4 tennis player Andy Murray shot to limelight and Jamie is mistaken for him. Even while Jamie was playing his first round singles match against Bahaman Rodney Carey on Tuesday at the R. K Khanna stadium,an ignorant spectator was speaking on the telephone: Andy Murray is winning here.
For Jamie who has lived the longer part of this sibling rivalry in the shadows of Andy, the ongoing Commonwealth Games could just be the opportunity to reclaim the worlds attention to his first name. And Jamie will be lapping up this opportunity as tennis will not be a part of the 2014 Commonwealth Games when his native Scotland will be the host. This is definitely the only chance I will have to represent Scotland at the Commonwelath Games. I am looking to make the most of it,he said.
The Scots would have, without doubt been the favourites to clinch the gold, had Murray junior been a part of the team but he opted out due to tour commitments. He was dead set against coming to Delhi as he had other more important tournaments to play. However, our current team has enough confidence in their abilities and will do well,he said. The brothers contrasting careers in the same sport are a subject of irony. While Andy was much awaited in India for the Games, not many people know Jamie, who mostly plays doubles now. And while Andys went from strength to strength,Jamies career went through a descent after a mixed doubles victory at Wimbledon in 2007 partnering Jelena Jankovic.
After a first round exit at this years Wimbledon,he will be looking to perform well at the Games to give his career much needed momentum. And he has begun the Games in the right direction by defeating Carey in straight sets 6-2,7-5.
Jamies serve and volley game on Tuesday was another contrast to brother Andys defensive counter punching game. The Scot is,however, aware of the mighty Indians that await him.
The sibling rivalry in the Murray home has existed since the Murrays were little children and Jamie was even one-up against his brother when he won a Grand Slam title something that has continued to elude Andy. But off late,Andys rise in stature has taken the sheen off their rivalry.
