Last year’s runners-up Mohun Bagan’s title hopes are as good as over after the Kolkata side lost 4-1 to debutants Lajong FC in the I-League.

Having been stunned by last-placed Sporting Clube de Goa in their last fixture,Bagan were dealt another big blow at Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Saturday. Lajong drew first blood through Seikhohao Tuboi in the ninth minute before Kelechi Okoya doubled the advantage in the 20th. Bagan, however, reduced the margin through Surkumar Singh in the 37th minute.

But injury time goals from Niwan-O-Gatphoh (90+2’) and Anil Gurung (90+3’) sealed Bagan’s fate.

With this win,Lajong climbed up from the relegation zone to be on third last spot with 20 points.

The dropped points mean that Bagan are now 10 points behind leaders Dempo, who beat JCT 2-1 in Goa on Saturday. Ranty Martins scored a goal in each half to guide Dempo to a win at Nehru Stadium in Margao. The win took Dempo to 35 points, five clear of second-placed Mahindra United.

In Mumbai,Mumbai FC continued to struggle, with their match against Air India ending in goalless draw.
