Kalmadi may be spared Congress stick, for now

Commonwealth Games Organising Committee Chairman Suresh Kamadi might just succeed in riding over the political storm.

Commonwealth Games Organising Committee Chairman Suresh Kamadi might just succeed in riding over the political storm generated by reports of alleged irregularities and corruption in CWG projects.

The Congress Core Group, which met at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s residence on Friday evening to take stock of the situation, was reported to have decided against taking any immediate action against Kalmadi.

However, the Core Group, comprising the Prime Minister,Sonia Gandhi,Pranab Mukherjee,P Chidamabaram,A K Antony and Ahmed Patel, was understood to have decided to leave it to the Group of Ministers to take a call on the issue. They also decided against instituting a separate committee or party mechanism to oversee the preparations. Preparations for the Games are already being monitored by the Cabinet Secretary on a regular basis.

Besides CWG-related issues, the core group was also learnt to have discussed the continuing unrest in Kashmir.
