Fourth seed Jelena Jankovic narrowly averted a first-round upset to beat unseeded Romanian teenager Simona Halep 6-4,4-6 ,7-5 on Tuesday. The 18-year-old Halep,ranked 96th,was two points from win,serving at 5-4 in the third set,before Jankovic broke her serve with a forehand winner to level the set. Two-time major champion Svetlana Kuznetsova also reached the second round,getting past 39-year-old Kimiko Date Krumm 6-2,4-6,6-1. In other results,Swede Sofia Arvidsson beat Romanias Sorana Cirstea 6-1,6-2 while Patty Schnyder of Switzerland beat Belgiums Kirsten Flipkens 6-1,6-3 and Australian Alicia Molik lost to Croatias Mirjana Lucic 7-6 (5),6-1. On Monday,Indias Sania Mirza won 6-3,6-2 win over Michelle Larcher de Brito of Portugal. However,Somdev Devvarman lost to South Africas Kevin Anderson 3-6,4-6,3-6 in the first round.
