Israel’s hardliner Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman was on Thursday quizzed by police on suspicions of fraud and bribery for the fourth time since he took oath in March.
During the eight-hour questioning,National Fraud Investigation Unit confronted Lieberman with a large number of documents gathered from Cyprus and obtained from his former attorney,Yoav Mani, which, according to police, show that the foreign minister laundered millions of shekels.
Police also suspect the ultra-nationalist leader of accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes from two businessmen between 2001 and 2004 while serving as national infrastructures minister and transportation minister.
It is suspected that some of the illegally gotten funds may have passed through a consulting firm owned by Lieberman’s daughter as well as a company owned by him, local media reports said.
Israel Police is believed to be in the final stages of the investigation against him and are expected to pass their findings soon to state prosecutors.
If Lieberman is indicted, prosecutors would need to get the Knesset (Israeli parliament) to strip him of immunity while the hardliner leader would have an opportunity to call a hearing to convince prosecutors not to indict him.
