Praveen Kumar runs across the road, dodging puddles with a phone charger in his hand as the drizzle threatens to turn into a downpour. By evening it is clear that Praveen will have to be on his toes and perfectly charged up since Ishant Sharma could end up missing the opening ODI in Napier on Tuesday.

The lanky Delhi pacer injured his shoulder while fielding on Friday and the MRI scan has detected a distinct soreness. The manager of the team,Niranjan Shah, said that since Sharma had an old injury at the same spot,as a precautionary measure he might be rested for the first ODI. “We will be assessing the injury in the coming days but there are chances that he might miss the Napier game,” he said.

With Irfan Pathan, too, not coming up with any outstanding display with the ball in the two T20 games, chances are Zaheer Khan will have two new pace partners in Napier. And this would mean that along with Sachin Tendulkar, who missed the Master’s game due to the BCCI-ICL issue, wouldn’t be the only one who will start the ODI series with no match practice.

Meanwhile, both the teams took it easy after playing two T20 games in three days. The teams, after a net session here on Sunday, will move to Napier.

Butler,Mills in ODI squad

Meanwhile, fast bowler Ian Buttler’s impressive showing in the Twenty20 has earned him a place in the New Zealand one-day team after a five-year gap for the first three games of the five-match series against India starting March 3.

Apart from Butler,Kyle Mills, who had strained his Achilles tendon, also made a comeback to the ODI squad after a two-week injury lay-off to augment an already lethal Kiwi pace battery, led by Iain O’Brien,Butler and Tim Southee. Jeetan Patel was ignored and the team has just one spinner in skipper Daniel Vettori.

New Zealand Cricket has tightened ground security after the bottle-throwing incident in the second T20. The Indian team management and match referee Ranjan Madugalle expressed concern over the untoward incident.

“This type of incident is unfortunate, especially in such a close game as we saw last night,” said Vaughan, adding,“Fortunately it does not occur often. New Zealand Cricket is fully committed to providing a high-level of security, and I have given my assurance to the Indian team that increased security will be in place for the upcoming series,” he added.
