An Indo-Canadian was among two doctors who have been arrested here on the charges of drugging and sexually assaulting a young woman,a media report said.
Amitabh Chauhan and Suganthan Kayilasanathan, both 32,are alleged to have drugged a 23-year-old woman by slipping an unknown substance into her drink at a downtown bar here, the Globe and Mail reported today.
Both doctors appeared in a court here for a bail hearing on Saturday after their arrest on Friday. But the court has adjourned the hearing until Wednesday.
The duo will remain in jail till the hearing.
Chauhan and Kayilasanathan allegedly met the woman at the bar and offered to provide her with career advice, the report said.
According to police, the men knew each other.
Toronto Police Detective Daniel Luff told reporters that police were concerned that the doctors had access to a variety of drugs and “there may be other victims and we would like them to come forward.”
Currently, the only allegations to be made public are those concerning the victim.
Sean Robichaud, who represents Chauhan, said that his client intends to fight the charges. “All I can say is that Dr Chauhan looks forward to contesting these allegations in court when the time comes.”
Chauhan,of Ancaster,is listed with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario as a postgraduate student at McMaster University with the Department of Plastic Surgery.
He graduated from McMaster University in 2010.
The second accused,Kayilasanathan,of Markham,is listed with the College of Physicians and Surgeons as a family physician practising at a Markham medical office.
