Indian woman sentenced to 23 yrs in jail for killing ex-lover

Indian-origin Lakhvir Kaur Singh has been sentenced to life imprisonment to serve a minimum of 23 years for poisoning her former lover and his fiance in January last year.

“Lakhvir Kaur Singh was found guilty of the murder by poison of her former lover,Lakhvinder Cheema,known to his friends and family as ‘Lucky’,and Grievous bodily harm with intent on his fiance,Gurjeet Choong,” Detective Inspector Tony Bishop of the Homicide and Serious Crime Command said after the Judge at the Old Bailey gave the verdict.

He said “fortunately the jury recognised the overwhelming evidence against Lakhvir Singh,finding her guilty by a unanimous verdict.

“However,it should be noted that despite the weight of the evidence against her,she steadfastly refused to admit her guilt,attempting to place the blame on another family member,and forcing those closest to Lucky and Gurjeet to give evidence in court.”

Lakhvinder,39,years died and his fiance,Gurjeet Choongh (at the time 21 years old) was seriously ill in hospital as a result of eating the poison,which had been added to a vegetable curry.

Lakhvir Kaur,who is married with three children,had been the lover of Lucky for about 15 years prior to his engagement to Gurjeet.
