Ricky Ponting became both the most successful captain and broke the record of featuring in most wins as a player in Test history as Australia beat Pakistan by 170 runs in the first Test in Melbourne. Nathan Hauritz claimed his maiden five-wicket haul in first-class cricket to guide Australia to victory while Mitchell Johnson made early inroads by stricking twice in the first over. Hauritz had three wickets on the final day to wrap up Pakistans innings for 251. Pontings 42 wins came from 65 matches as captain overtaking Steve Waughs record of 41 from 59 while his 93rd win as a player took him past Shane Warnes record of 91. Shane Watson was adjudged Man of the Match for his 93 in the first innings and unbeaten 120 - his maiden Test century - in the second. Johnson finished 2009 on a successful note with 63 wickets overall. Pakistan resumed on their overnight score of 170/3 and Johnson dismissed 19-year-old Umar Akmal for 27,just four balls into the days play before removing Misbah ul-Haq the following ball, both caught behind by keeper Brad Haddin and Pakistan never got going after the early stutter. Kamran Akmal survived Johnsons hat-trick ball, but was the first off Haurtizs two wickets in two balls, stumped his counterpart. The visitors hero with the ball,Mohammad Aamer was surprised by the bounce and gloved straight to Simon Katich at short-leg. Abdur Rauf managed to survive the hat-trick ball, swinging wildly over the ring of close fielders, but he was soon bowled by Doug Bollinger for five. Pakistan survived to lunch but Hauritz finished things in the second over after the restart. Captain Mohammad Yousuf was caught by Simon Katich at short leg for 61 and Saeed Ajmal was caught at mid-wicket by Shane Watson for 10 to usher Ponting to the top of the all-time Test captaincy records. Brief scores: Australia 454 and 225; Pakistan 258 and 251 all out (Mohammad Yousuf 61; Nathan Hauritz 5/101,Mitchell Johnson 3/46)
