Indian cricket team heaved a sigh of relief as opener Gautam Gambhir cleared a fitness test on Thursday to join his teammates who will leave for South Africa on Friday to participate in the ICC Champions Trophy.
Gambhir had sustained a groin injury during the BCCI Corporate Trophy,in which he led the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC).
Even though the left-hander travelled to Sri Lanka with the team for the tri-series there,he returned home without playing a single match after he had aggravated the injury.
He was advised 10 days test and underwent a fitness test today before being cleared for the Champions Trophy starting September 22.
“Gautam Gambhir has been cleared to go to Champions Trophy after fitness trials today,” BCCI secretary N Srinivasan said in a statement.
With Virender Sehwag recovering from a shoulder injury,India were without both of their regular openers in Sri Lanka. The team think-tank tried Dinesh Karthik in the slot but the stumper-batsman failed, forcing the management to ask Rahul Dravid to open the innings with Sachin Tendulkar in the final.
