Just as Beijing Olympic bronze medallist Vijender Singh acknowledges fans, someone in the crowd points out: “There is a bruise on your forehead. Are you coming from a bout?” “No,” replies the Bhiwani boxer, who hasn’t competed in an event since September, but he’s gearing up for one, soon. If he’s feeling rusty,it doesn’t show.

After the six-month break,Vijender is back to rigorous training at the NIS,Patiala. “This,” he says of the bruise,“means that I am completely fit now and back to normal training.” He might have been away from the ring for a while, but not from injuries and had picked up one early this year.

Focus on world meet

“As of now I’m fully fit now,” he insists. “I’m in good shape. I’m not sure about the participation in the King’s Cup in April but I’ll definitely take part in tournaments in Czech Republic and Kazakhstan before taking part in the World Championships in Milan,Italy.”

Leaving no stone unturned for the forthcoming competitions,Vijender wants to train in Britain. “I’m waiting to get the visa to train in Britain. Training in the UK will be very important as I’ll also get a chance to work with the likes of Terry Edwards,” says Vijender.

Right now, though, the 23-year-old is looking for a good sparring partner. “I need a good sparring partner,it’s very important. Thankfully,I know everyone at the NIS very well and will keep trying out with various fellow boxers.”
