An ethnic Indian Hindu woman in Malaysia has dragged her estranged husband to a court to stop him from converting their twin girls after he changed his faith to Islam.

29-year old S Krisnavani, who is now living with her parents since learning that her husband Magendra Rao converted to Islam last Friday,is seeking an injunction against him and his representatives from converting their five-year-old Sivadarsni and Sivarubini.

The couple married in 2006 according to Hindu religious rites.

She has filed an ex-parte application, together with a certificate of urgency in the High Court,to obtain an interim order from the court to grant her custody, care and full control over the twins and to stop her husband from coming near them.

Krisnavani is also seeking an order to direct the police to extend all assistance and cooperation to her in ensuring the twins’ safety, fearing that they may be taken away forcefully from her.

The woman, who came to the court with her two daughters, claimed that Rao,a farmer, had been behaving in a strange manner since early this year. In her affidavit, she claimed that her husband had frequently beaten and scolded her without any reason.

Speaking to reporters later, her counsel A Sivanesan said this was the first time in the country’s legal history that an aggrieved spouse had sought an injunction to stop the conversion of minors by the spouse who had converted to Islam.
