Cornelius the hero as Eagles eliminate Sussex

It was a straight battle for qualification, devoid of equations unlike the first game at the Ferozeshah Kotla on Tuesday.

It was a straight battle for qualification, devoid of equations unlike the first game at the Ferozeshah Kotla on Tuesday.

And it took a Super Over to see the Eagles through to the next league stage as Sussex Sharks lost the plot in dramatic style. Chasing just 10 for a win in the one-over shoot-out after the match had been tied,Sussex’s nominated batsmen for the Super Over failed to score anything in response, losing their quota of two wickets off the first two deliveries Cornelius de Villiers bowled.

Dwayne Smith was bowled first ball going for a big heave, and Rory Hamilton-Brown lost his stumps next up even as the impressive Luke Wright watched helplessly from the other end.

Earlier,in regulation play, the Eagles got off to a flier chasing 120,with Rilee Rossouw guiding the innings. But they lost their way in the second part of the chase as Piyush Chawla and Michael Yardy tied them down. From a comfortable position, they contrived to reach a point where they needed 12 to win off Yasser Arafat’s final over. They managed to get only 11 of those,Ryan McLaren hitting a boundary off the last ball to tie the match.

Earlier,Sussex Sharks opted to set a target on Tuesday evening, and Luke Wright, who arrived on Monday to bail the county out, flattered to deceive. The England opener smacked two sixes and a boundary but fell playing an ambitious swipe.

Brief scores: Sussex Sharks 119/7 in 20 overs (J Gatting 25; C de Villiers 2/20) tied Diamond Eagles 119/4 in 20 overs (R Rossouw 65; R Hami-ton-Brown 2/15,P Chawla 2/17) .

Super Over: Eagles 9/0 beat Sharks 0/2
