A relieved man after his side made it to the title clash of the Champions Trophy,New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori has said it was the burning ambition of winning a big tournament that helped the Kiwis cross the semi-final hurdle against Pakistan.

New Zealand broke their big tournament semi-final jinx, beating Pakistan by five wickets on Saturday. “There is a real ambition in the side. There’s belief and desire to win tournament instead of just ending up as semi-finalists,” Vettori said after the victory. “It’s good that we came to this semi-final on the back of two good wins. We carried the momentum forward,it wasn’t as if we scrapped to the semi-finals,” he added.

The Kiwi captain played a crucial role in his side’s win with 41 runs and 3-43 but preferred to shower praise on Grant Elliot (unbeaten 75 off 103 balls) with whom he shared a match-winning 104-run stand for the fifth wicket. “His (Elliot’s) innings was full of character. He played a memorable knock,” Vettori, who was also the Man of the Match said.

Younis advised 4-week rest

Karachi: Meanwhile,Pakistan captain Younis Khan has been advised four weeks’ rest to recover from his finger injury. “ I decided to play by taking pain-killer injections. Now I have been told to rest for four weeks to make a complete recovery from the injury,” he said. Younis also said his New Zealand counterpart Vettori was th difference between the two teams in the semi-final. “He gave a fantastic all-round performance. He was the difference between the two teams.”
