Iraqi officials say a bombing in a town north of Baghdad has killed eight Iraqi army soldiers.

Iraqi officials say a bombing in a town north of Baghdad has killed eight Iraqi army soldiers.

Police and army officials say the incident occurred in the volatile Diyala province when a gunman opened fire from a house near an Iraqi army checkpoint.

They say the soldiers called in support and surrounded the house. The house blew up,killing the eight soldiers and wounding another four.

The blast took place in the town of Sadiyah,95 kilometres north of Baghdad about 1 am on Wednesday.

The death toll was confirmed by both Iraqi police and army officials. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak to the media.
