Fast bowler James Anderson was recalled to the England squad on Sunday for the third and final Test against Sri Lanka after recovering from a side strain.
Anderson was injured in the dramatic victory over the tourists in the first Test in Cardiff and was replaced by the uncapped Jade Dernbach for the second Test at Lord’s,which ended in a draw.
Dernbach,who was 12th man at Lord’s,made way for the return of Anderson in the only change to the squad that needs either a victory or a draw in Southampton to clinch the three-match series.
Anderson will get a runout in Lancashire’s Twenty20 match against Worcestershire on Sunday. If he emerges unscathed,he will return to lead England’s pace attack most likely replacing Steven Finn in captain Andrew Strauss’ starting XI. “Side strains can be particularly troublesome for bowlers but given Jimmy’s injury was a low grade injury,he is expected to be fit for selection,” said England selector Geoff Miller.
Although Finn was the most successful of England’s three tall seamers at Lord’s,taking four first-innings wickets,he was expensive and gave away many cheap runs with some wayward deliveries.
Fellow paceman Stuart Broad’s place in the team is also starting to become vulnerable after taking only six wickets in four innings in the series.
The Rose Bowl,which is the home of county side Hampshire,will be hosting its first ever Test.
