American journalist sexually assaulted during Egypt crisis

An American woman journalist was allegedly beaten up and sexually assaulted by a mob in Egypt while covering the celebrations on the night of President Hosni Mubarak's resignation.

An American woman journalist was allegedly beaten up and sexually assaulted by a mob in Egypt while covering the celebrations on the night of President Hosni Mubarak’s resignation.

Lara Logan,the CBS chief foreign correspondent is recovering in hospital after the incident.

In a short news release,CBS said that the channel’s team was surrounded by a mob of more than 200 people whipped into frenzy,in the midst of the celebration.

“In the crush of the mob,she was separated from her crew. She was surrounded and suffered a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating before being saved by a group of women and an estimated 20 Egyptian soldiers,” CBS said.

Logan then reconnected with the CBS team,returned to her hotel and took the first flight to the United States next morning.

The incident lasted for roughly 20-30 minutes,a person familiar with the matter told ‘The New York Post’,adding that it was “not a rape”.

More than 140 journalists were attacked,detained and suffered some form of injury,according to the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists.
