12 killed in Russian military plane crash

A Russian Antonov military cargo aircraft crashed in the country's Tula region.

A Russian Antonov military cargo aircraft crashed in the country’s Tula region,killing all 12 members of the crew,the Defence Ministry said today.

The Russian Air Force’s An-22 Antei plane,once the world’s largest transport aircraft,was on its way to an airport in the Tula region when it disappeared from radar screens at 21:30 Moscow time last night (midnight IST).

Its debris was found five hours later near the village of Krasny Oktyabr,the ministry said,adding all 12 crew members were killed in the crash.

NTV reported that a search and rescue party on board the snow scooters has reached crash site in the remote snow-covered terrain and recovered all the 12 bodies of the main and additional crews.

Russia’s Investigations Committee confirmed that all 12 people on board were killed.

Officials said the cause of the crash could only be established after the flight recorders were recovered.
