President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam today reached out to over 400 women sarpanches as he emphasised the importance of women’s role if India were to become a developed nation by 2020.

In a style typical of him, the President had a surprise in store. Despite his lack of fluency in the language, he began his speech in Hindi but later switched over to English.

Describing one of the women sarpanches from Chhattisgarh as ‘‘Jhansi ki Rani’’ for the way she conveyed her achievements while highlighting the problems she faced, the President said villages need many more such grassroot leaders like her for the development of rural India.

The sarpanches are here on a three-day training camp organised by the NGO, the Guild of Service, in collaboration with public affairs section of the US Embassy.
