AHMEDABAD, Nov 16; A whole nation had smirked when denim was invented many summers ago, but today it has become the semi-conventional dress code of an entire generation. It8217;s too early to say the same for polythene but, if one goes by Jayshriben Pujara8217;s prediction, you may soon find people dressed up in8230; well, in polythene packs!
Making a caustic political statement, she says the spiralling prices of essentials may soon make it difficult, if not impossible, to buy regular dresses. 8220;I can talk to Vajpayee about this if you want me to,8221; says Pujara, a vociferous champion of her polythene propaganda.
8220;It8217;s cheap,8221; she says. 8220;Just cost me around Rs 300 to make it. And, of course, two days.8221; Insisting that her unusual work was hand-made 8212; 8220;no machine8221;, she quips repeatedly 8212; Pujara says she has full confidence in the feasibility of the dress.
But what about the heat? 8220;Well, you can wear it in winter,8221; she persists. 8220;At least children can certainly wear it,8221; she says with a touching faith in the immunity of children to heat or cold.
Asked about the inspiration behind her work she says, 8220;Kapde ka dress sab koi banata hai lekin polythene ka kisi ne socha nahin tha.8221; And while she prepared the transparent, and at times tanslucent, dress Kayur Desai provided the 8220;delicate looking model for the barbie doll effect.8221;
Not one to sit quiet Pujara soon plans to make a dress 8212; skirts, maxis and tops 8212; that will be fashioned from newspapers!
So, the next time you want to read the morning news catch one of her models strutting about in a skirt that screams One killed, two injured8217;.
