On the eve of Gandhi Jayanti, President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam today called upon the nation to rededicate themselves to peace, tolerance and promote communal harmony.

‘‘Let us work to make the nation happy, prosperous and safe with the unity of minds. This indeed will be the greatest tribute to the Father of the Nation,’’ Kalam said in his message to the nation on the eve of the 134th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Calling his journey through Porbandar a ‘‘pilgrimage’’, Kalam described the Mahatma as a great leader who had the moral courage to assert what was right and sacrificed his life fighting for this cause. ‘‘Gandhiji taught us that the nation was bigger than individuals, religious institutions or any political system,’’ the President said.
