The Kolkata police have decided to use portable breath-analysers to test drunken drivers this New Year. The decision came after several drivers, under the influence of alcohol, caused many accidents thereby turning celebrations into mournings during the last few New Year eves, said a senior police officer.

“This year, officers in casual uniform will be posted at various road intersections in and around Park Street. If a person is found driving in a drunken state, he would be fined or imprisoned,” he added. Besides, policemen will monitor crowded places with binoculars from high buildings. Security of major hotels, bars and restaurants has also been stepped up to thwart possible terror strikes.

The police have given strict instructions to owners of major hotels and clubs in the city to install closed-circuit cameras with recording facility.
