External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee will give clarifications in the Rajya Sabha on the recent developments in Sri Lanka, an issue over which several members expressed their anguish, on Thursday.
Mukherjee, who made a statement in the House on the issue on Wednesday, said that he would be prepared to answer clarifications which the members wanted to seek.
He said he was happy to make the statement in the Rajya Sabha unlike in the Lok Sabha where Left members stormed the well of the House, prompting him to only table the statement.
“I am happy I could make the statement here. Mr Raja’s (CPI) colleagues did not allow me to make the statement in the other House,” he said.
Earlier in the day, the issue of plight of Tamils in Sri Lanka sparked uproar in the Upper House with members wanting India to strive for a political settlement of the ethnic issue in the island nation.
In his statement, Mukherjee said that India was concerned over the plight of civilians caught in the hostilities in Sri Lanka.
