The central committee of the Communist Party of Nepal-Maoists (CPN-M) is virtually split over the political line of action the Party, and the government led by it, should adopt in the coming days with a majority expressing its unhappiness over the way PM Prachanda has been conducting affairs of the state over the past three months.
However, the committee stopped short of adopting any ‘resolution’ censuring the PM, and instead decided that a national conference of the party be summoned on November 10 . The conference will decide what kind of polity—a multi-party democracy or a ‘people’s democracy’ implying a communist republic—would be the future line of the party.
The deliberations and criticism faced by the Prime Minister in the central committee clearly proves that he is in a minority while the ‘uncompromising radicals’ were in a absolute majority, a central committee member told The Indian Express. “It was no doubt a defeat for the PM,” he said. “We have decided to settle all the issues at the national conference,” said Barshaman Pun, a prominent central committee member. “It will chart out the party’s future action plan and strategies,” he added.
The Committee for the first time saw a parallel political line being pushed by Kiran Baidya, a senior leader of the CPN-M, challenging that of Prachanda’s. Kiran is in favour of a decisive movement to establish a people’s republic instead of going for a compromise in the form of a coalition Government. Prachanda’s as well as Kiran’s documents will now be placed before the conference. “Besides the policy of the government, PM Prachanda was also criticised for corruption and nepotism that he was promoting in the government”, another central committee member said.
