LISBON: Portugal’s government has urged its people to be gracious hosts to the hordes of fans attending the Euro 2004 soccer championship this month. “It is important that we take maximum advantage of this event and demonstrate to those who visit our intrinsic and cordial hospitality,” Jose Luis Arnaut, the cabinet minister overseeing the tournament, wrote in a mass-mailed letter. “Portugal is ready and counting on you.”
Onopko out of Euro 2004
MOSCOW: Russia captain Viktor Onopko has been ruled out of the Euro 2004 finals starting in Portugal on June 12 with a knee injury. “Onopko is out, he has already left the squad and has gone home,” Russia’s general manager Alexander Chernov said. Onopko’s withdrawal means that the Russians have now lost both of their starting central defenders.
Deco resigned to sidelines
LISBON: Deco Souza led Porto to victory with a man-of-the-match performance in the final of the Champions League but he is resigned to starting Euro 2004 on the bench. Luiz Felipe Scolari has played Rui Costa as his playmaking central midfielder in most of Portugal’s recent friendlies and Deco does not expect the coach to have a change of heart.
