The Chandigarh police might omit the ‘culpable homicide not amounting to murder’ charges in the brutal accident last night, in which an advocate — Nitin (32) — died and his friend Ashish (34) sustained injuries after a speeding Safari hit their motorcycle at the dividing road in Sector 8 and 9.

Police officers at the Sector-3 police station said the driver was drunk and he dragged the bike along with the victims with his car up to one kilometre.

“After examining all the facts in the investigations, we might commute the charges of causing death due to negligence with culpable homicide not amounting to murder,” he said.

The police said it is a brutal act by the driver, Akjot Singh Sandhu, who dragged the victims despite being aware he had hit the bike.

The accused was produced in the court and granted bail. The driver had hit the motorcycle of Nitin near Sector-8 market around 10.30 pm. Eyewitnesses said Sandhu was driving at a very high speed. When he hit the bike from rear, instead of halting his vehicle, he sped it away. The victims got under the car. The car stopped near Sector-9 market after hitting the road divider.

Nitin’s body was handed over to his family members after conducting postmortem at the Government Multispecialty Hospital, Sector 16. Doctors attending to Ashish at PGI stated his condition was critical.

Nitin’s father, a retired superintendent at the District and Sessions Court, said Nitin had called them up minutes before his accident and informed them that he would reach home in 15 minutes.

“The police should have charged the driver for Section 304 instead of Section 304A at the first place. The accident reveals the brutality of the accused who showed no mercy to the victims and dragged them. The entire stretch is stained with the blood of the victims,’ his father cried.

Nitin got married three years ago and has a two-year-old child.
