MARCH 17: In a major operation, the Social Service Branch (SSB) of Mumbai police raided lottery centres in the city and seized a large quantity of eastern lottery tickets this morning. According to SSB sources, the raids were carried after the government banned the sale of lottery tickets other than those of Maharashtra.

Most of the seized lottery tickets belonged to Eastern Lottery and were priced between Rs 1 and Rs 20, sources added. The exact figures of the seizures were not available with the SSB as raids were underway. The number of tickets and their value is yet to be ascertained.

The seizure of eastern lottery tickets, particularly tickets from Meghalaya, assumes significance as the numbers on the tickets are also used in a kind of `quick betting’.
