The Centre’s decision to set up a committee of secretaries to look into the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations is unlikely to satisfy officers of the Indian Police Service.
The IPS (Central) Association, which held a general body meeting here on Thursday night, has asked for a Group of Ministers (GoM) to look into their grievances. Going a step further, the association sought rectification of the recommendations in a “transparent” and “participatory” manner and demanded parity in pay, promotion, pension and service conditions with the Indian Administrative Service (IAS).
Expressing “deep anguish” at the recommendations with regard to “all ranks” of the police, the association urged the Centre not to accept the recommendations in the present form. The Government had to recognise the role of police in “national security and development considering all its intrinsic and extrinsic dimensions”, the meeting, attended by nearly 200 officers from across the country, resolved.
The gathering of officers sought to draw the Government’s attention to the sacrifices made by police personnel. “We just want the IPS to be given its rightful dignity,” an officer who attended the meeting said.
