CHANDIGARH, Nov 3: After having reportedly recovered stolen government property from a City-based contractor last evening, City police are now allegedly involved in a cover-up bid after the contractor revealed his “high connections” in the Administration.

A team of the Crime Branch Operations (CBO) Cell, raided the Sector 44 residence of a relative of the contractor and recovered a drum of the expensive XLPE cable belonging to the Northern Railways, sources said.

“After the police recovered one drum of the cable, he confessed that he had stolen six drums and used five of those in other places where he had been given the contract for laying electrical cables,” police sources said. “He threatened the police officer heading the team, saying that he knew a senior functionary in the local administration, and asked the policeman to speak to the official first,” sources in the police revealed.

The police officer, in turn, informed his seniors and was asked to report the matter to the area SHO and take no further action, sources said.

The area SHO, Nanha Ram Kadian, however, denied any knowledge of the incident: “No one has reported anything to me,” he said.

Inspector General of Police, R.P. Singh, when contacted also said: “I have no knowledge of the incident. You should get in touch with SP Baldev Singh”.

However, Baldev Singh, who is currently officiating as the Senior Superintent of Police, said that following directions from the IGP, he had visited the spot and “found nothing.” “There is no truth in it. Some people are trying act clever,” he commented.

Sources, on the other hand, allege that the contractor in question is being shielded because he enjoys considerable clout with a senior official in the Administration.
