MUMBAI, June 18: The Thane district rural police today opened fire on a four-member gang of dacoits attempting to loot a petrol pump at Padgha on the Mumbai-Agra highway.
This is the third time a petrol pump in the area has been targeted by dacoits. This time, though, their designs were foiled by an alert policeman on duty at the pump.
The Thane belt has recently witnessed numerous such incidents, forcing the district superintendent of police, A T Kamte, to post armed policemen to guard petrol pumps. Early this morning, around 4.30 am, a four-member gang of dacoits came to Vartaman petrol pump at Padgha near Bhiwandi, threatened the cashier and asked him to hand over the collected cash to them.
However, the alert PHC on duty, Pore, fired two rounds from his rifle at the dacoits, following which they fled in a Maruti van. In a similar incident two weeks ago, another petrol pump was looted and the police officer of the concerned station was suspended. There are nearly ten petrol pumps in Padgha.
According to reports, the police patrol party of PSI Konduberu who were on patrolling duty chased the Maruti in which the dacoits fled, but could not nab them.
