MUMBAI, SEPT 12: Maharashtra Cultural Affairs Minister Pramod Navalkar feels the human element in policemen should be given due importance, which would entail drastic changes in the police department.
Navalkar was addressing police personnel at a discussion on `Indian Police: 50 Years of Independence — An Introspection’ at the Police Club in South Mumbai.
He said policemen are burdened with work as they perform tasks which are not included in their duties.
State Director General of Police Arvind Inamdar said it is high time the police changes its attitude towards people and understand their needs. “It is our fundamental duty to protect the lives of people,” he said. However, providing a comparative review, Inamdar said people in Maharashtra are more responsible, reasonable and alert compared to the other states.
Kumar Ketkar, editor of Maharashtra Times said the media is in touch with both worlds — the police as well as criminals. Hence, the media plays an important role, sometimes inwithholding news which may harm society. Most of the time, like the police, the media too is criticised for its role but sometimes the interest of society is to be taken into account, he said.
