The CBI today refuted allegations reportedly made by an accused in the CBSE PMT paper leak case, Nikhil Mehrotra, to Delhi Police. Mehrotra has reportedly said that Ranjeet Verma, the prime accused in the case, had told him that the CBI had let him off after questioning him in previous paper leak cases after Verma allegedly paid them.

The CBI has also questioned the leaking of Mehrotra’s disclosure when Verma had himself denied this to the police. ‘‘It is expected that the veracity of such a serious allegation levelled in the statement of Mehrotra should have been verified in a professional manner by the authorities concerned before giving access to the media to such allegations,’’ said a written statement by the CBI.

Hinting at a deliberate leak, the statement says, ‘‘It is no surprise that these kinds of reports are appearing now after the arrest of the Investigating Officer of the paper leak case by CBI for accepting Rs-2 lakh bribe from the father of Ranjeet Verma.’’

The CBI stated that Verma had denied to Delhi Police that he had paid any bribe to any official when confronted with the statement of Mehrotra. DCP, Crime Branch, Dependra Pathak, the CBI said, had met senior CBI officials yesterday and ‘‘he himself had confronted both Mehrotra and Verma and Verma had denied to have told Mehrotra that he had paid money to any CBI official.’’

Pathak confirmed that he had met CBI officials yesterday but refused to comment any further.

The CBI stated that it had received no official communication from Delhi Police in this regard and since there was no evidence at any stage to arrest either Ranjit Verma or his brother, Satinder, they were let off after interrogation.
