The Prime Minister’s Office has written to the National Commission for Women, asking about the progress it has made in the rehabilitation of women victims of the Gujarat riots.

Sources in the NCW said the Commission received the letter about a week ago, following which a team comprising Nirmala Seetharama, Baby Rani Maurya and Nafisa Hussein left for Ahmedabad.

The Commission, after it came under fire for maintaining silence on the riots, visited the refugee camps in the state three months after the riots.

Sources in the NCW said that although it had received a bunch of petitions from victims, no individual case had been followed up to its logical conclusion. ‘‘In some cases, the Gujarat government responded but later nothing was heard from them again,’’ the sources added.

The PMO’s letter has come at a time when there is growing resentment against the NCW’s role in the post-riots scenario. ‘‘Had the Commission acted in time, cases like that of Zaheera Sheikh would have been been looked into well in time,’’ sources said. NCW authorities said the Commission would now prepare a report on the condition of victims.
