Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will visit the north-eastern border areas to supervise fencing work along the India-Bangladesh border.

Singh gave this assurance to a delegation of All Assam Students Union (AASU) on Thursday. In the first meeting with AASU leaders in 16 years, the PM told them that he will visit the border areas along with Home Minister Shivraj Patil. He also assured implementation of the Assam Accord.

In a two-and-half-hour meeting, the PM also urged AASU leaders to work with the state government and the Centre to create a climate of peace and stability. This, he said, was essential for peace and rapid economic development of Assam and the entire north-eastern region and ‘‘for unleashing of the creative potential of the people of the region’’.
