Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi tonight condemned the ‘‘mindless’’ violence in Andhra Pradesh, in which 9 persons including Congress MLA C Narsi Reddy were killed by Naxalites and said government was committed to fighting terrorism in all its forms.

Conveying his condolences and his deep distress on the act to Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, Singh said: ‘‘No interests of the people can be served by mindless killings of innocent people,’’ according to PMO spokesman Sanjaya Baru.

The Prime Minister ‘‘has reiterated the commitment of the government to fight terrorism in all its forms,’’ Baru said.

Sonia Gandhi, too, condemned the attack, saying such incidents are a ‘‘blot’’ on the society.

‘‘Those who show such insensitivity, they are the well wishers of none. We will have to create an atmosphere to counter such violence in the society,’’ she said in a condolence message to Reddy’s wife.

At this moment, the only option was to remain courageous, she said.

Reddy and eight others, including his son and a municipal commissioner, were gunned down this morning by Naxalites during the inauguration of a school building in Narayanpet town, 120 km from Hyderabad.
