Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee joined millions of Indians celebrating the team’s remarkable Test victory over world champions Australia in Adelaide on Tuesday.

“My special praise for Rahul Dravid for his dependable play in both innings, especially his record-breaking double century,” Vajpayee said in a message to the team.

Polly Umrigar

The boys have put a marvellous display. If their first Test performance was good it was far better in the second Test. The victory is just a forward step in Indian cricket. Our boys did exceedingly well in batting, bowling and fielding. I have a feeling that we are going to give a jolt to them. They (Aussies) cannot take it lightly. Besides they are low on confidence too.

It’s a great morale-booster for Indian cricket. Coming back after the Aussies had scored 566 … is something never heard of. It started with Saurav Ganguly’s hundred (at Brisbane). He led from the front which led to the players believing that the Australians could be beaten. Others also contributed which puts the team in good light. It is a good sign for future matches.

Kapil Dev

They deserve every bit of the success that has come their way. It was a great game of cricket.

The win has endorsed V V S Laxman’s statement before the start of the series that the “Australians are not unbeatable.” In fact, it brougt back fond memories of the 1981-82 series when we beat Greg Chappell’s Aussies.

Anshuman Gaekwad

We should take pride in the win. Indians excelled in all departments which augurs well for the future of the game in India.

It’s a great victory. Taming the mighty Australians in their own den is something that has to be appreciated. Full credit must go to skipper Saurav Ganguly for passing on his aggressive infection to the rest of the members of the team. Previously, we used to lose the first Test and struggle to level the series. Now, we have the advantage to win a series in Australia.

K Srikkanth

It’s one of the greatest victories in the annals of Test cricket. It was an example of teamwork. This victory is out of the world and incredible. The Aussies might have missed their strike bowlers (Glenn McGrath and Brett Lee) but that would not take away anything away from the victory.

Chetan Chauhan

It’s a victory which had eluded us for a long time. It should give the team confidence to do even better in the remaining matches and win the series. Each member of the team contributed to the victory.

Yashpal Sharma

There never was any doubt about the outcome once the team had crossed the 100-run mark for the loss of only two wickets. Although I expected an India win with more wickets in hand, it’s a sweet victory against the best team in the world.
