Bonhomie marked the return of prodigal son Kalyan Singh today as Prime Minister Vajpayee and his deputy Advani welcomed him to join forces.
Vajpayee’s hearty laughter marked his re-entry to the BJP followed by an emotional welcome from his deputy, known as Singh’s patron in the party until he was expelled. Singh promptly touched his feet while Advani returned the gesture with an embrace.
He then drove to the residence of BJP chief M. Venkaiah Naidu. Minutes later, he was welcomed at the BJP headquarters by Agriculture Minister Rajnath Singh, general secretaries Pramod Mahajan and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and party UP incharge Kalraj Mishra and state chief Vinay Katiyar. He then announced the grand merger.
‘‘Our most revered Vajpayeeji was, is and will be our leader. ‘‘When he said (on December 24) we will meet again, I immediately said whenever you order me,’’ said Singh. ‘‘When my mother organisation is engaged in the historical task of national development, I can not stay away from it…I am extremely happy.’’
Naidu described his return as a ‘‘homecoming’’. ‘‘We will work together to achieve new heights. We have decided to fight elections in UP under his (Singh’s) guidance.’’
On the sidelines, Naidu announced the entry of former UP minister and Lok Sabha MP Balram Singh Yadav and called upon others to make the switch ahead of polls.
‘‘The battlelines are drawn. The world is looking towards India. India is looking towards NDA. The NDA is looking towards Atal Behari Vajpayee. We have given a call to all those who are interested in the progress and prosperity of the nation to come and join hands with the BJP.’’
