All the Prime Minister’s men would gather around him tomorrow. Not to discuss the war in Iraq or today’s Kashmir massacre but to pat each other’s backs for a job well done.

The Council of Ministers has been invited to the Prime Minister’s residence for dinner to celebrate five years of good governance by the BJP-led coalition government which took charge on 19 March 1998.

With short tenures to its credit, this Government has many celebratory dates to choose from. Last October, they sang and danced over completion of three years in office of the NDA. Five months later, they are gorging themselves for ‘‘unique initiatives landmark achievements’’ from March 1998 till date.

Sources said the festivity would have taken place last Wednesday but for Holi which fell on the same day. Most ministers were out of the Capital to be with their kith and kin.

Sources also said the date was decided keeping in mind the presence of ministers here as most ministries are holding their Parliamentary Consultative Committee meetings during the week.

And to keep the attendance in order, a Cabinet meeting has been called prior to the dinner, while meetings of the various Cabinet committees have been shelved to spare time for the mahabhoj which will be catered by the Indian Tourism Development Corporation as usual.

So what if a majority of the ministers have not completed five years in office or some of the coalition partners were not part of the BJP government which lasted 13 months, all are headed for 7, Race Course Road tomorrow.
