Congress president Sonia Gandhi has requested Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to ensure that regulatory laws are not misinterpreted to allow FDI in retail. In a letter, Sonia said she had received representations from several organisations that despite the law not permitting it, FDI is entering retail. She urged the prime minister to take “all views into consideration before proceeding further.”The letter assumes significance in the light of recent arrangement between Bharti and Wal-Mart which was opposed by the Left and many organisations. Congress is divided. Finance Minister P Chidambaram and Commerce Minister Kamal Nath are for opening up the sector while political managers of the party are against it.
